Communication

If every important conversation turns into a fight, “communicate better” isn’t very helpful advice. The real question is where the conversation goes off the rails.

Start with the pattern you recognize

A simple place to begin

Choose a time when neither of you is already worked up. Talk about one problem, not the entire history of the marriage. Explain what happened, how it affected you, and what you’re asking for. Then let your spouse finish their answer before you start building your rebuttal.

If either person gets too overwhelmed to listen, take a break and agree on exactly when you’ll come back. A break without a return time usually feels like avoidance.

Want something structured to work through together?

Marriage Books for Communication Problems matches several well-known books to the pattern you’re trying to change. A book can provide structure, but it can’t make an unsafe conversation safe.
